Basal cell carcinoma is the most common form of cancer worldwide. It accounts for approximately 90% of all skin cancers.
This highly treatable cancer starts in the layers of the skin (basal cell layer) under the topmost layer, and grows slowly. It rarely spreads to other parts of the body, but can spread locally and destroy surrounding tissue if not treated early.
Symptoms
Basal cell carcinoma usually appears as a small, shiny bump or nodule on the skin - mainly those areas exposed to the sun, such as the head, neck, arms, hands, and face.
Causes
The exact causes are not known. However, BCC is thought to be caused by sun exposure. This type of cancer is most common with older people who have red or blonde hair, fair complexion, and light-colored eyes.
Treatment Options
Treatment options vary by the stage the cancer is in, and by the individual patient. As with all cancers, early detection and treatment are crucial, and BCC should be treated promptly.
Surgery to remove the growth is the most common treatment method.
