Actinic Keratoses are a common precancerous growth caused by extensive sun exposure. They have the potential to turn into skin cancer.
Symptoms
Symptoms of Actinic Keratoses vary. Some of the more common include:
- Rough patches of skin
- Red, scaly skin
- Crusty skin
- Sores
The most commonly affected areas are:
- Face
- Lips
- Scalp
- Neck
- Forearms
- Back of the hands
Causes
While the exact cause is not known, long-term exposure to sunlight or artificial UV radiation sources are widely considered to be the most common cause.
Actinic keratoses can occur at any age, however, they are more common as we reach our 40's and 50's.
Fair skinned people are more likely to be affected.
Treatment Options
Treatment options will vary by the stage of the actinic keratoses, and the individual patient. The most common treatment methods include:
- Surgical removal
- Cryotherapy
- Chemical destruction of the lesions
- Topical drug therapy
- Photodynamic therapy
- A combination of these treatments may also be used
