Brown spots (also referred to as age spots, liver spots, or lentigines) are areas of brown pigment usually found on the hands, face, back, shoulders, arms, and feet.
While brown spots are commonly associated with aging, sun exposure is the main cause. Pigment is deposited as a response to sun damage, and collects in areas that have had greater sun exposure. Age spots also may be caused by bruising.
Brown spots are usually not harmful; however, they may look like melanoma and require evaluation.
