Birth marks affect approximately 10% of the population. While not always apparent at birth, a birth mark will generally appear within a few weeks.
Birth marks vary in size, and may be brown, tan, blue, pink, red, flat, or raised. They fall into two main categories:
- Pigmented: Typically comprised of areas of excessive brown or black pigment
- Vascular: Made up of blood vessels (usually pink or red) bunched together in the skin
